8 Checks Before Choosing a Private GP in the UK

Before choosing a private GP in the UK, check the doctor’s registration, the service’s regulation, the total cost, and who will manage results and ongoing care. Paying for an appointment does not guarantee a prescription, a particular diagnosis, or faster NHS treatment. My priority would be a service that explains its clinical limits and responsibilities as clearly as its booking options.

1. Check registration before choosing a private GP

Ask for the doctor’s full registered name and GMC number. Use the General Medical Council register to check registration, a current licence to practise, and any published restrictions. Look at GP Register status and ask about general-practice qualifications and relevant experience. A clinic’s brand name does not identify the individual responsible for your consultation.

2. Identify the correct service regulator

The GMC regulates doctors, not clinics. For service registration, look to the Care Quality Commission in England, Healthcare Improvement Scotland, Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, or Northern Ireland’s Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority. Match the provider’s legal name and location, and read available inspection information. For online care, ask which registered organisation provides the consultation.

A mention in Manchester Chronicle might introduce a business, but it is not a regulatory check. Verify the actual service rather than relying on a familiar-looking name or a logo displayed on its website.

3. Get the full price in writing

Ask what the consultation fee covers, how long the appointment lasts, and what follow-up costs. Check separate charges for tests, prescriptions, certificates, referral letters, cancellations, and discussing results. If using insurance, confirm your policy covers this GP service and any excess. A membership price does not necessarily include every appointment or investigation you might need.

4. Match the service to the problem

Confirm age limits, appointment format, examination facilities, and access arrangements. A remote consultation may lead to a recommendation for an in-person examination. Ask what happens, including additional charges, if the clinician cannot safely assess you remotely. Do not use a routine private booking instead of emergency care; call 999 for a life-threatening emergency.

Marketing support from organisations such as Local PR Services UK concerns visibility, not clinical suitability. I would judge the service by how specifically it answers these practical questions, rather than by the confidence of its advertising.

5. Establish how records will be shared

Tell the doctor about relevant conditions, allergies, medicines, and recent investigations. Do not assume a private clinic can automatically see your complete NHS record. Ask how it obtains necessary information and communicates consultation findings to your usual GP. Clarify its privacy arrangements and request your own written summary so that important decisions are not held only in memory.

6. Understand private prescribing

A private prescription normally means paying the medicine’s cost and dispensing charges, which can differ from the NHS charge. Ask about repeat prescriptions, monitoring, and review fees before starting ongoing treatment. Your NHS GP is not obliged to convert a private recommendation into an NHS prescription; they must independently accept that prescribing is appropriate and within their responsibility.

7. Clarify referrals and NHS boundaries

Ask whether referrals will be private or NHS, which service will receive them, and who will track the response. Private assessment does not purchase priority on an NHS waiting list. Eligibility and clinical need still matter. Also establish who arranges any recommended investigation rather than assuming your NHS practice will automatically provide tests requested privately.

I would keep clinical letters apart from general reading on Glasgow Bulletin. A useful handover identifies the assessment, recommendations, outstanding tests, and the clinician responsible for the next step.

8. Name the person responsible afterward

If tests are suggested, ask why they are needed, what would change, and whether you can decide after receiving a quotation. Establish how normal and abnormal results are communicated. Paying for an investigation should leave you knowing who will interpret it, not merely where it happens.

Before paying, ask who reviews results, contacts you about urgent findings, and responds if symptoms worsen. Find the complaints process and out-of-hours arrangements. Choose a GP service whose responsibility continues beyond the booking screen, with clear instructions for follow-up and a practical route to ask questions.

This checklist is general information, not an endorsement of any provider or a substitute for individual clinical advice.
